WellCare Health Plans overview

WellCare Health Plans, Inc. focuses exclusively on providing government-sponsored managed care services. Launched in 1985, they aim to assist families, children, seniors and individuals with complex medical needs primarily through Medicaid, Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, as well as individuals in the Health Insurance Marketplace. Today, WellCare served approximately 6.4 million members nationwide as of September 2019.

Wellcare was established in 1985 in Florida as a Medicaid provider. The company when public in 2004. Since 2012, the company has acquired a number of smaller Medicare and Medicaid supplement providers in order to expand the company's national coverage.

In 2020 a merger between WellCare and Centene closed, making the two the largest US health insurer, with around 22m members. The total value of the transaction was around $17.3bn.

Headquartered in Tampa, Fla., WellCare is a Fortune 500 company traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
