MS Amlin overview

MS Amlin is an independent insurer specialising in providing insurance cover to commercial enterprises, and reinsurance protection to other insurance companies around the world.

MS Amlin specialises in Reinsurance, Marine & Aviation, and Property & Casualty. They employ over 2,400 people across 26 locations around the globe.

Amlin plc was formed after companies Angerstein and Murray Lawrence merged in September 1998, although Murray Lawrence and Partners can trace their history back to 1903. Amlin was acquired by Mitsui Sumitomo, part of the MS&AD Group, in February 2016 for £3.5bn, becoming MS Amlin. The insurer itself has acquired multiple businesses, including RaetsMarine in 2013 and Lockton, Crowe Livestock Underwriting, and Fortis in 2009.

In recent years MS Amlin has launched their own Innovation Lab, MS Amlin EDGE, which focuses on future technology, big data and new startups, amongst other things. In 2018, the insurer partnered with Cytora, with plans to use their AI technology to hone operations and introduce open market underwriting. Previously, the London-based startup has partnered with QBE and XL Catlin. The following year, they launched a new technology combined product allowing clients to pick and choose products and alter coverage as they require. Types of coverage include cyber, business interruption, terrorism and public liability.

MS Amlin was listed on the London Stock Exchange until it was acquired by the Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group in 2016. The purchase price was £3.5bn.

In 2019 MS Amlin announced its plans to drop nine business classes - including aviation and P&C UK Insurance - as part of a new underwriting strategy. It will redeploy its capital and management focus on three core markets, and build on its reinsurance, create a speciality insurance based on its marine and P&C international platforms, and selectively operate domestic speciality markets in European commercial insurance.

In September 2020, MS Amlin announced a partnership with insurtech Allphins, to support its exposure management capabilities.

In September 2021 MS Amlin AG announced Robert Wiest would be taking over the role of CEO from January 2022.

MS Amlin announced a partnership with UK-based, battery-focused insurtech Altelium in May 2022, offering a risk insurance solution for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in light of the ongoing climate change crisis.

In June 2023 MS Amlin partnered with Genpact to launch a new AI-powered claims triage capability, Genpact is supporting a number of functions to transform MS Amlin’s processes and accelerate its ability to provide leading client service.
