Manulife overview

Manulife Financial, founded in 1887, is a leading Canada-based financial services company with principal operations in Asia, Canada and the United States. The company operates in Canada and Asia as "Manulife" and in the United States primarily through its John Hancock Financial division. As of 2019 the company has over $877bn assets under management and administration, and employs more than 34,000 employees. It serves more than 28m customers globally.

Manulife Financial's international network of employees and agents offers a broad range of financial protection and wealth management products and services. It offers personal, commercial, corporate and investment banking products to customers across its three operating divisions: Asia, Canada and the United States, each of which represents about one third of overall business.

Manulife Financial issued its first Asian policy in Shanghai in 1897. Now diversified across Asia, it has more than 50,000 contracted agents selling its products and has expanded its distribution capabilities to include more than 100 bank partnerships and more than 500 dealers, independent agents and brokers. In 2019 the company pushed for further growth in the Asia market with key appointments to its leadership team. That same year, in November, the company's Hong Kong branch launched its first fully-digitalised cashless service for day surgeries. Initially phased in at 80 locations around Hong Kong, the service enables customers to gain quick claims pre-approval for simple day surgery's such as colonoscopies.

In April 2016, Manulife became the first Canadian insurance company to offer life insurance to people who are HIV-positive, insuring people who have tested HIV-positive, who are between the ages of 30 and 65, and meet certain other criteria for life insurance policies that would pay up to $2 million upon death.

Manulife partnered with Dacadoo in March 2020 to enhance ManulifeMOVE, its health engagement platform, in Asia. The partnership uses behavioural science, curated content and digital coaching, as well as Dacadoo's patented health score, to help users make better lifestyle choices.
