Metro Bank (UK) overview

Metro Bank bank offers personal, commercial, business and private banking services. It launched in July 2010 as the first new high street bank in more than 100 years.

Metro Bank was founded by Anthony Thomson and Vernon Hill in 2010. Its first branch opened in Holborn, and the company stated it planned to open over 200 branches in London within its first decade.  It provides services to both personal and business customers.

In early 2019 the bank announced it had insufficient capital to meet regulatory requirements after a classification error within its commercial loans worth £900m. The error resulted in the bank needing to raise £350m in capital, large amounts of cash withdrawals from depositors, and share prices dropping by 75% in just a few months.

In October 2019, Metro Bank announced that Chairman and co-founder Vernon Hill would leave the company at the end of the year.
