Alan overview

Alan is a French SaaS health insurance provider offering an easy way to buy insurance for individuals, businesses and freelancers.

Alan offers an online health insurance platform that is 100% online, with zero paper, which allows users to sign up in less than 5 minutes. It does this through its smart user interface, which enables users to capture and upload documents with their phone. It offers coverage to individuals, families, businesses, and independent professionals.

Alan is the first insurance business to be licensed in France since 1986. Alan was founded by Jean-Charles Samuelian (CEO), who also co-founded Expliseat, a start-up redesigning airline seating, and Charles Gorintin (CTO), who specialises in data science. As of 2019, Alan has a team of over 120, and works with 2,850 French companies, covering a total of 37,000 people.

In 2018, Alan announced its expansion beyond health insurance by offering telemedicine appointments via its platform, with help from new partners, Livi, the French subsidiary of telemedicine company, KRY. The same year, it launched Alan Map to help patients find nearby GPs, dentists, ophthalmologists and other qualified medical professionals.

In August 2019, as part of a large press conference, Alan announced new products, expansion plans, a tech stack refresh and new branding. Its new insurance products, branching out from simply supporting freelancers, have several specific audiences. Its first is designed for hospitality companies and employees and is available via mobile. Its second targets individuals who are retired, are public servants, or are people who don't work for a French company, or have specific needs. As part of its growth plans, Alan also revealed that it plans to enter new geographies in 2020, with the first targets being Spain and Belgium. To accomplish this, Alan plans to double its employee count to 250, and is currently working on its own payment system to help make payments and quoting 10x faster.

In March 2020, in response to the global Covid-19 pandemic, Alan offered its services free of charge without obligation, to everyone until the end of May. Services include a free telemedicine consultation and more.

The following month the company raised a €50m Series C round, led by Temasek. The round brings Alan's total funding to €125m in four years. The insurtech plans to use the funds to help accomplish its aim of being available across Europe by 2025.

In January 2021 Alan revealed plans to launch multiple free mobile apps that will help users better understand specific areas of health and find others who are affected by them. The first app is Alan Baby, which provides guidance on sleep, nutrition and development, and can be customised based on the age of the infant. The app also enables users to text doctors, and includes a forum so parents can find support from peers.

In April 2021 Alan raised a €185m Series D round - with its valuation now reaching €1.4bn. The company said it would use the funding to hire an additional 400 employees, and reach 1m members in Europe over the next 2 years - Alan currently works with 9.4k companies, with 155k end-users.

In September 2021, Alan announced its acquisition of CBT B2C app Jour for $20 million, for a new service called Alan Mind. B2B offering Alan Mind aims to help the 3 out of 4 under-35's in France suffering from a mental health issue. Alan, also revealed it now insures 200k people.

In early 2022, despite signing up 35k members, Alan shut down Alan Baby to focus its efforts on Alan Mind, its mental health offering.

In May 2022 it was revealed Alan had raised a further $193m (€183m) in funding, with Co-Founder and CEO Jean-Charles stating the funding would allow the company to be self-sustaining until it reached profitability. The company's post-money valuation also jumped from $1.5bn (€1.4bn) last year, to $2.9bn (€2.7bn).
