Find out moreFair aims to grant access to mobility to everyone through its Car-as-a-Service (CaaS) concept. It gives customers the freedom to drive the car they want for as long as they want, and the flexibility to walk away at any time. Fair enables customers to select their car, miles and view payments via a mobile app. Requiring a drivers license and bank details (or a credit card), Fair offers flexible leasing plans to individuals for casual use and for work purposes.
In January 2018 Uber sold its Xchange Leasing portfolio to Fair. The financial terms were not disclosed, though earlier reports suggested Xchange's book value for its 30,000 strong fleet was around $400m.
In 2018 Fair announced a strategic partnership with Ally Financial, enabling Fair to use Ally's SmartAuction and Clearlane tools to manage vehicle inventory and provide customer access to an alternative to traditional financing channels.
Also in 2018, the company acquired Canvas, which had previously been owned by Ford. Alongside the announcement, Fair revealed it had around 45,000 US subscribers, with 3.2m overall downloads from 30 markets.
In August 2019 Fair announced it had closed a $100m debt facility and equity investment, led by Ally Financial. The debt facility is designed to help the startup secure vehicles for entry-eve; car customers who might not otherwise qualify for traditional loan or lease. Fair's other investors include SoftBank (who led Fair's $385m Series B), Exponential Ventures, Munich Re's ERGO Fund and more.
In October 2019, it was revealed that Fair was to lay off 40% of its staff, and its CFO, Tyler Painter, was to be replaced by interim CFO Kirk Shryoc. Shortly after, CEO Scott Painter also stepped away from his role, and was replaced by SoftBank CFA Adam Hieber briefly before Brad Stewart, former CEO and Chairman of XO, took over.
In April 2020, the Fair Go program that enables Uber drivers to lease cars by the week ended, as the company pushes for profitability.
Fair is headquartered in Santa Monica, California and has a team of around 500.
