Find out moreFM (formerly FM Global) is a mutual insurance company which specialises in property risk management and loss prevention. It offers property insurance and engineering solutions that protect against fire, natural disasters and other types of property risk.
FM offers products that are designed around engineering and individual needs. It offers a wide range of insurance and risk engineering services offerings to help build long-term resilience. Beyond its property insurance, it also offers FM Boiler Re (which offers specialised equipment breakdown reinsurance), FM Cargo, and FM Renewable Energy.
The company also offers a range of specialist risk management services, including hot work guidelines, boiler and machinery services evaluations, predictive analytics, and more.
FM has insured over 60k locations in more than 145 countries. FM states it provides more than one-third of Fortune 1000–size companies with engineering-based risk management and property insurance solutions.
In 2003, FM opened its FM Global Research Campus, a centre for advancing the science of property loss prevention. It has separate labs that each focus on Fire, natural hazards, electrical hazards and hydraulics.
In 2017, FM established a new insurance company in Luxembourg, FM Insurance Europe S.A., and launched the FM Learning Center in the US.
In 2019 FM invested $1m into insurtech RiskGenius, which leverages AI to automate underwriting. Previously, FM had invested into AirWorks, an aerial mapping and surveying startup.
In May 2024 FM announced the launch of a renewables energy unit, FM Renewable Energy. It will assist clients with mitigating energy transition risks.
FM Global rebranded as FM in July 2024.
In January 2025, FM announced it had reached an agreement in principle to acquire Velocity Specialty Insurance Company, an excess & surplus insurance provider. The acquisition is expected to close by mid-2025.
