Cigna overview

Cigna is a global health service company with 95 million customers around the world and more than 40,000 employees worldwide.

Cigna operates in the United States but has an international reach offering life, accident and supplemental health insurance products and international health care products and services to businesses and individuals in selected markets.

The company’s subsidiaries are providers of health care and related benefits, the majority of which are offered through the workplace, including health care products and services, such as medical coverages, pharmacy behavioural health, dental benefits and disease management, group disability and life and accident insurance.

In addition to its ongoing operations described above, Cigna also has certain run-off operations, including a Run-off Reinsurance segment. In the Phoenix metropolitan area, Cigna runs a full-service staff-model HMO (health maintenance organisation) with satellite clinics throughout the region, known as the Cigna Medical Group.

Cigna works with employers and organisations around the world helping employees stay healthy and on the job. They work closely with brokers and consultants to develop innovative programs, help individuals and families improve their health, well-being and sense of security and lower their medical costs.

Cigna was formed by the 1982 merger of the Connecticut General Life Insurance Company (CG) and INA Corporation. The company has $41.6 billion in revenues. Combined, Cigna processed 168 million medical claims in 2017 and has a relationship with over one million healthcare providers, clinics and facilities.

Cigna is launching a mobile clinic with a staff of health coaches to help people identify risks for chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease while also giving them a better understanding of healthcare.

In late 2018, Cigna completed a $54 billion acquisition of Express Scripts Holding Co., setting up a battle among giant health companies to try to cut health-care costs by managing both medical and drug benefits.

In 2019 Cigna integrated with Alexa to offer a new skill, enabling consumers to track wellness incentives. The 'Answers by Cigna' skill will offer on-demand answers to more than 150 commonly-asked healthcare questions.

The following year, its Singapore branch launched Cigna Virtual Clinic, a digital innovation, powered by Doctor Anywhere, that provides customers with access to licensed doctors via a mobile app.

In September 2021, Cigna partnered with Asian healthtech The CareVoice to leverage its platform and applications. Cigna's strategic goal is to help meet unmet needs of women customers in Hong Kong.
