Five overview

Five is developing the software to power shared, self-driving vehicle services in Europe.

Formerly branded as FiveAI, the startup has created its own self-driving system, aiming to use its AI platform to create a fleet of autonomous taxis. It uses similar techniques used to develop wireless chips - abstraction, extraction, simulation, verification and validation.

Five is part of the StreetWise self-driving project, with fellow partners Transport for London, the Transport Research Laboratory, Direct Line and Oxford University. The project aims to decrease congestion and increase parking availability.

In 2017 Five raised a $35m Series A, led by Lakestar Capital.

In October 2019, Five announced that it would be trialling self-driving cars in London, carrying volunteer passengers. The routes aim to test how to cars react to different situations and human drivers. The cars will each have a safety driver behind the wheel.

Five raised a $41m Series B in March 2020, with new investors Direct Line, Sistema VC and Trustbridge Partners joining existing investors.

Founded in 2015, the company is headquartered in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.
